About Atlantic City
Atlantic City is an entertainment mecca, and arguably one of the most popular places to gamble on the East Coast. But that's not all you'll find in the playground by the sea. Atlantic City offers lots of slots and table games but also knock-out dining, great shopping no matter what your budget, and plenty of chances to relax, whether your idea of re-calibrating yourself is getting a massage or lying on the beach. Atlantic City has always been a resort town, and folks in search of cooler weather and entertainment have been flocking here since the 1920s. This popular vacation destination boasts hundreds of attractions, including amusement parks, theaters, parks, beaches, and of course, casinos. Gambling arrived at the city about 30 years ago, really kicking the area up to a new level and drawing more visitors than had ever walked down the Boardwalk before. Today, recent renovations to established casinos (and the addition of a few new ones) have helped Atlantic City become popular once again. Even if you have no plans on taking your chances in the casinos, there's plenty to see and do in Atlantic City.
Early Atlantic City History
Atlantic City was first settled by the native Lenni Lenape tribes of America, long before European explorers came to the country's shores. The area was mostly used as a summer fishing and hunting destination, and was called "Absegami island" (now called Absecon island).
19th Century Atlantic City History
The city wasn't officially settled until the 1820s, when Dr. Jonathan Pitney and his friend, engineer Richard Osborne saw the potential for a glamorous seaside retreat. They petitioned for the railway to extend from Philadelphia to the coast, and Atlantic City began to boom. It was incorporated as an official city in 1854, attracted vacationers from Philadelphia and other East Coast cities because of its "therapeutic", fresh ocean air. Since its inception, the city was a resort town, and resort hotels sprung up immediately to provide entertainment and lodging for the city's many visitors. Construction on the famous
Boardwalk started in 1870, with the original purpose of keeping sand out of the seaside hotels; its popularity quickly grew, and the iconic attraction expanded and lengthened rapidly as more businesses were built along the coast.
Atlantic City Today
Gambling was made legal in Atlantic City in 1976, and became a major draw for visitors looking for gaming opportunities in the area. The city has gone through many economic ups and downs, but to this day, has remained as the place to go for entertainment, fun, and a great beachside retreat.
